If you've spent any time at all with Rails, you've doubtless noticed the acts_as commands in ActiveRecord. Though ActiveRecord deals with persistence, you often want to add behavior to your classes beyond database storage and retrieval. For example, by using acts_as_tree, you can add tree-like behavior to a class with a parent_id attribute. By saying nothing more than acts_as_tree in your ActiveRecord model, you can dynamically add methods to manage the tree, such as methods that retrieve the parent record or child record.
